In South East Queensland, land clearing and vegetation removal is governed by local, state and federal legislation such as the QUEENSLAND NATURE CONSERVATION ACT 1992, the QUEENSLAND VEGETATION MANAGEMENT ACT 1999 and the FEDERAL ENVIRONMENTAL PROTECTION AND BIODIVERSITY CONSERVATION ACT 1999.
These statutes provide some degree of legislative protection for wildlife likely to be affected by land clearing.

WILDLIFE SPOTTER-CATCHER

Many Shires, Councils, developers and companies are undertaking prior assessments and recommendations for sites under development. One of these recommendations may be the presence of WILDLIFE SPOTTER CATCHERS on site during clearing and development of land.

A professional wildlife Spotter- Catcher can not only observe the clearing of the area, but also are able to identify, habitat, nest sites & environmental elements, which may constitute a threat to the wildlife at the site. This is a highly skilled job, which requires not only an ability to identify habitat, but also the ability to deal with all wildlife on site as to deliver best outcome for all.

A WILDLIFE SPOTTER-CATCHER who is working on site, must be experienced in safe capture techniques of dangerous and potentially lethal native wildlife species as well as know how to protect and safely relocate these animals to a suitable site within the Permit guidelines.

WILDLIFE ANSWERS has the relevant permits and experienced staff to provide a Spotter-Catcher on-site to deal with wildlife disturbed or compromised during clearing of vegetation.

As a member of the Queensland ASSOCIATION OF PROFESSIONAL WILDLIFE MANAGERS we are committed to providing best practice and best outcome for all.

KOALA SPOTTER

The following information regarding koala spotter requirements is provided pursuant to the Nature Conservation (Koala)
Conservation Plan 2006 and Management Program 2006-2016 (the Koala Plan).

A KOALA SPOTTER is required if a person/s intend to clear, which is defined as: remove, cut down, ring bark, push over or destroy in any way including burning, flooding or draining a tree species identified as Angophora, Corymbia, Eucalyptus, Lophostemon and Melaleuca with a minimum trunk diameter of 10 cm at 1.3 m from the ground and are located within Koala Habitat Areas of Koala District A.

This, under the Koala Plan, requires a person to have a Koala Spotter present on site during the clearing of such a site to protect koalas from death or injury and to allow for their safe movement away from a clearing site.

A Koala Spotter is required even if ONE koala habitat tree is being removed.

The number of Koala Spotters required would be determined by the scale of clearing and manner in which it is undertaken. The Koala Plan requires clearing to be carried out in the presence of a Koala Spotter, and one Koala Spotter is therefore required per machine, except where two machines are working in tandem in an area where one Koala Spotter can reasonably inspect and view during the procedure all trees being cleared. If machines are working in different areas on site, one Koala Spotter is required to be present at each clearing area.

Note: - Koala Spotters are not permitted to, capture, remove or relocate a koala found on site during a clearing operation. Koala Spotters must abide to strict regulations as set out by the EPA & QPWS.

In accordance with current EPA & QPWS Permits and regulations, WILDLIFE ANSWERS can provide multiple experienced Koala Spotters at a site, prior to and during clearing operations.
